Shoot The Flash But Don't Kill The Photographer

It's easy, it's easy, it's really easy - adding a nice soft directional light to the scene or the subject. In many of my daily image posts, I'm often asked how I am getting the light on the subject. Well, this lighting tutorial solves the riddle once and for all.

In this tutorial I discuss my easy to use umbrella shoot through flash technique. I'll show the exact flash/umbrella set up and why this gives me the best results. I'll also show what the assistant needs to see from his position and what the camera sees. Enjoy!

  1. Great tutorial, David. The positioning tips (assistant seeing the subject's far cheek) was especially helpful for me.

  4. Hello David - very helpfull tutorial! I have a question though - do you use the flash on the camera at all for these pictures? Or does it just assist the radio tricker?
Love your BLOG, its on my daily to do list.

  5. What is the flash to subject distance or umbrella to subject distance for the shots in the tutorial? Was the umbrella just out of the frame or was it further back?

  7. Very helpful tutorial. I also flipped through some of your other tutorials. I absolutely LOVE you for your teeth whitening "free" tutorial that was at the beginning of your Keep Them Smiling tutorial! Thank you for that. I've seen steps to whiten teeth, usually with the dodge tool, and have not had good success with them. Tried your method and it worked perfectly.

I enjoy reading your blog and have learned a lot from you. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise! :)

That's a great tutorial. As always, I might say. It's a pleasure to see a master explain his work :)
