OK, time for a wedding image today.  I know it’s been a while, so here we go.  This image is one of the unusual wedding candids I try to pull off at every wedding.  I call it the “Pole-Cam” shot.  I place the Sigma fisheye lens on my camera which is locked onto a monopod.  Just as the action starts to peek, I press the shutter release with the camera’s self timer at ten seconds.  At about six seconds, I raise the camera over the heads of the partiers and call to them to look up at the camera.  By the time they get the message, all faces are looking skyward just as the flash fires getting a great candid for the bride. Hey, it’s always about creating something a little different for the client.  Just remember not to shoot your toes when making this shot;~) Camera specs; Canon 40D fitted with 8mm Sigma Fisheye, F6.3 @ 1/60 second, ISO 800.  Enjoy!  -David

  1. Hi David, I attended your Wake up call at Jacksonville FL,

How do you focus camera for this shot. Manual focus to a set distance before you raise the camera up on pole / or does the auto focus tries to focus on more time just before taking the shot ?

  2. For about $20 you can buy a 6 foot remote trigger cable. Depress halfway, it focuses (put your camera setting on "front button" focusing). Depress fully and the shutter is triggered. No having to wait ten seconds. No missing moments. No "shucks, that didn't work out well, let's use another ten seconds to try this again", no "gee, holding up this monopod with a camera for ten seconds at a top heavy tilt sure gets heavy soon enough".
