I made this image a few weeks ago as part of a portfolio shoot I was doing in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. The “urban” look in wedding photography, high school seniors, and fashion photography is all the rage these days.
Non traditional backgrounds for bridal portraits can certainly elicit a different response from the viewer. Just look at this image. The bride is not giving us a soft smile in her expression. It almost seems as if she is more defiant in her gaze. I think her expression fits the gritty surrounds and works well.
I also like the dark red brick balancing the rich red of the bouquet. Although these urban elements are not generally part of a wedding day shoot, this kind of self assignment can be a great creativity booster for you.
To me it seems that a different set of neurons get firing in your brain when you juxtapose your subject into a setting so different from normal day-to-day routines. Hey, it was fun, and I captured some nice images.
Lighting was through my Zumbrella from camera right. I also “cheated the sync” resulting is a slight vignette of the flash at the bottom of the frame.
Camera specs: Canon 7D fitted with 8-16mm Sigma lens ay 8mm, F6.3 @ 1/320 second, ISO 200. Enjoy! -David
Find the pose to be gripping. Certainly not the average Ziser shot.
ReplyDeleteYeah, David, I love the edginess of this shot. It's out of the box for you, and I think it works well. I'd love to see more like it!
