"Flower Child"

"Flower Child"

The soft ethereal quality of this image is what I think makes it work. This image was part of a senior portrait session I did of this young lady, the daughter of a very good client. She had her own thoughts on the type of portrait she wanted - ,edgy, carefree, light, airy. The soft cotton dress, which she tore for added effect, plays into the gentle feeling of this outdoor setting. The image was shoot entirely available light - no axillary flash at all - with just the ambient of the overcast day. The shadows of the scene were softened with the very light tonalities of the dried grasses throughout the scene. Viewer's attention is maintained on the subject with the very shallow depth of field of the scene. All these factors combine for a very nice portrait of this young lady in spite of the fact that the image was made in January, in the middle of winter, with temperatures hovering about 25 degrees. The slight warming tweak in Photoshop finished the image. Camera specs; Canon 20D fitted with 50mm lens, F2.5 at 1/640 second, ISO 800.

Enjoy! -David

  1. I think it is a great shot, but it is still little flat. a touch more contrast would pop the image from the background.
