"Shadow Play"

I love how this image turned out.  When I first looked at it, I thought there was something interesting going on compositionally.  With just a few judicious tonality changes in certain parts of the image, I had what I wanted. The title implies what I like about this image - the shadow play, or the play of "lights" and "darks" dancing across the image.  At first I didn't like the shadow at the bride's shoulders cutting across her body.  But, after darkening the top of the image and slightly "burning down" the bottom right corner of the image, it started to come together. Now that line leads the viewer's eye right to the bride. The single monotone orange colors of the brick offer a simple yet effective background for this urban bridal portrait.  I brought the key light in from camera right to illuminate the bride. Had I brought the light in from the other side, I would have cast a nasty shadow on the wall, hence the broad lighting.  Camera specs: Canon 5D Mark II fitted with 12-24mm Sigma lens at 22mm, F 6.3 @ 1/320 second (cheating the sync), ISO 200.

Enjoy!  David

  1. Did you have to flip your camera upside down to cheat the sync?
