"Stairway to Heaven"

This image was captured at the Cincinnati Club, one of the favorite wedding venues in the city .  Why?  Because of the beautiful swirling staircase.  The location is tight when trying to place decent light on the subject, but in spite of the tight conditions we were able to pull it off.

Notice the beautiful and flattering S-curve in the bride’s position – the head tilting camera left, neck to the hips creating a line in the opposite direction, and the hips to the leg changing direction again.

I love too how the steps grow from narrow to wide framing the bride elegantly in its descending curve. The curve of the steps compliment the classic S-curve of the figure of the bride. Placing the bride in the bottom right quadrant of the frame completes the composition.

Lighting is from camera left, strobe through Zumbrella at 1/8 power about 6 feet away. This position allowed for the light to cross the gown, enhance the gown’s lacey detail and also to create a loop lighting pattern on the bride’s face.

Everything came together to create a very elegant bridal portrait of my beautiful subject.

Camera specs: Canon 7D fitted with Sigma 8-12mm lens at 8mm, F4.5 @ 1/15 second, ISO 800.  Enjoy!  -David
