Our African Safari in 1000 photos or Less

Good Afternoon Everybody,

I hope everyone had a great Easter weekend.  It was quite a bit different than in years past but connecting with family and friends still made it a special day.  I hope yours was special too.

I thought one of the most creative ideas to "church services" in these days of "sheltering at home" was the approach taken by the paster at Bellarmine Chapel at Xavier University here in Cincinnati, Ohio. He gathered photos of all the parishioners which he then proceeded to print out and tape to all the church pews.  It was quite an uplifting Easter story - here is the link to the short video [link]. Enjoy!

Our African Safari in 1000 photos or Less

Now back to what we do here at DigitalProTalk.com, I want to share our 2020 African Safari with you this morning. As many of you know, LaDawn and I have been traveling with our good friends, Kevin and Tricia Dooley of Idube Photo Safaris [link] these past few years.

Kevin has been leading safaris around the world, but mostly to Africa, for nearly 20 years.  About 4 years ago he asked if I would be interested in joining him - I leaped at the opportunity!  And now we have been on four photo safaris with the Dooley's - all pretty cool!

Our other two sold-out safaris for this year had to be postponed till next year because of all the current travel restrictions.  If you are interested in more info, please let me (david@ziser.com) or Kevin (idubephotosafaris@yahoo.com) know.  We will be happy to get you more info.

Anyway, after a big trip like this, LaDawn and I (mostly LaDawn, really just LaDawn), will edit the thousands of images, tweak the favs, and design a Blurb book telling the entire story from start to finish of our adventures.

LaDawn just wrapped the album design and exported the double-page spreads for upload to Blurb. But I had another idea for the 350 or so spreads.  I thought I would load them in ProShow Producer [link], a great video/slideshow program that I've been using for years with my wedding photography. Unfortunately, they just shut their doors, but the program still works very well for these types of projects.

Anyway, I loaded up all the high-resolution double-page spread, added my royalty-free music,  tweaked the show a bit, and let it rip.  About an hour later I had a very cool video of the entire album of images.  I have to tell you, it looks GREAT on our 82-inch Samsung 4K TV ;~)

I then uploaded the video to my YouTube channel for all to enjoy.  Just click the PLAY button below and enjoy the show.  Most of us have a smart TV so I would recommend loading it up from your YouTube app on your TV for the best viewing experience.

These videos have been a great way for us to re-live our travel experiences. LaDawn and I both agree that after spending hours, days, and even possibly weeks designing these albums and then"arm-wrestling" with Blurb to get them uploaded and published to the tune of about $250/book, the best way to enjoy the whole travel experience is much better accommodated with the videos. BTW...LaDawn LOVES the elephants so be prepared to see LOTS of elephants in the video.

I'm currently in the process of updating our other travel books to videos as well. LaDawn is currently working on a new travel book of our experiences in Iceland and Ireland, one of our favorite trips from 2018.  I'll plan on sharing those images with you as well.

But, in the meantime enjoy this video, including several images of LaDawn and I (lol) and if you have any questions, just leave them in the comments section below and I'll do me best to answer them for you in a timely fashion.

Hey Gang,

That's if for me today.  I really hope you enjoy the post and the photographs.  I'll plan on putting up a few more Tips and Tricks in the coming days.  Remember, leave your comments below.

Adios for now, David

TOP 12 Posts for DigitalProTalk in 2012

Good Morning Everybody,
Imaging USA 2013I'm sitting in sunny Atlanta this morning – what a beautiful day. Actually the last couple of days have been absolutely wonderful. This beautiful day is having a little trouble brightening up the sad faces of the Atlanta Falcon’s fans after yesterday’s heartbreaking 4 point loss to San Francisco.  But hey, there’s always next year.  We keep wondering about the Cincinnati Bengals too ;~)
Yesterday I headed down to the World Congress Center for Imaging's USA's first day of convention trade show. I hear they had record crowds. Things sure looked busy to me.  I hope we experience record crowds at our Photo Pro Expo 2013 coming up in only 2 1/2 weeks [link]. I did a quick run through the trade show visiting with old friends, checking in with my vendor buddies and generally just having a great time catching up with everyone.
Today I'm heading to the trade show again but unfortunately, I won't get nearly as much time to spend on the floor. I've got a couple meetings I need to attend so I may plan on sticking around a few more hours tomorrow before driving back home. At first glance the show was full of activity there wasn't any one thing, new and exciting that really stood out for me. Maybe when I cruise the show again today something will catch my eye and I'll be sure to report it here first thing.
Update on PhotoPro Expo Hotel Room Availability
Hey gang, I want to let you know that the registrations are coming in hot and heavy for PhotoPro Expo 2013, in fact so hot and heavy, that the Marriott hotel is about sold out. They've given us twice the rooms as last year and we've already upped the original room count two times just in the last two weeks. So, I sure hope you're planning to come the PhotoPro Expo 2013, February 7 – 11 and if you are in need of a room (only$99) contact the Marriott [link]and make your reservation before they're completely sold out.
TOP 12 DigitalProTalk Posts for 2012
Top 12DPT posts 2012Well, I scoured the 2012 DigitalProTalk page view statistics to see the most popular posts. Some posts were literally off the charts with the number of reads.  My review of Tamron's 28-300mm VC was the clear winner.  Like I said in the post, it’s one of my favorite lenses – check it out in the first link below.  A lot of the top posts were related to gear but that’s to be expected.  If you missed any of the posts throughout the year, you can catch them in today’s post. I’m planning to also post the Top 12 Business Day Thursday posts and Top 12 Image of the Day posts in the near future – stay tuned.
Anyway, there's a lot of good reading here so I hope you'll sit back relax and enjoy.

DigitalProTalk.com: 3,000th Post Today!

Good Morning Everybody,

3000And welcome to my 3000th post at DigitalProTalk.com. Yes, it's true, today DigitalProTalk.com is 3000 posts old. That's quite a milestone and I have all of you, my loyal DigitalProTalk.com readers, to thank for giving me the incentive to post 5 days a week for these last 4 1/2 years.

Since starting this blog around September of 2007 DigitalProTalk.com now averages about 350,000 page views a month with its 3.3 million readers coming from 205 countries worldwide!  The countries leading in readership are the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Poland, Spain, and Italy in that order.

Map

Again, when I look at the analytics it just boggles my mind. I'm both humbled and grateful with the readers who have shared time with me at DigitalProTalk.com.

Let me give you more a few more statistics that DigitalProTalk.com has logged. The average daily postings totaling over 1500 words each day brings the total words that I blogged to just a little over 1.6 million. That many words would fill 2 copies of the Bible, both Old and New Testament or 3 copies of Leo Tolstoy's epic novel, War and Peace

There have been over 200 video tutorials posted on everything from lighting, photography, light room, Photoshop, and business building tips.

Find TTues

To give you a little hint on how to find all of them just enter Technique Tuesday in the search box in the top left corner of this blog.

Sales GrothAmong these 3000 posts are over 200 Business Day Thursday posts. These posts are always targeted to photographers, from aspiring professional to seasoned pro, and focus on success tips that can help you continue to grow your business.

There have also been over 1000 “image of the day” posts. It is sometimes challenging to find an image five days a week. With each image I attempt to post the back story, what I was thinking as I was making that image, the technical details involved, and any pertinent lighting details as well. Nearly all the images have been posted with the pertinent excerpt data as well. Daily Image

The easy way to explore the over 1000 images is to just search © David A. Ziser and just about all of them should pop since I include this copyright information with each photograph.

Other ways to search content on my blog is by exploring the topics listing in the right-hand column. You may have to scroll down just a bit to see them.

One thing I like about my blog is that there is no easy way to find any specific point of information. It is very much akin to my CD and DVD collection. Those collections to are neither organized or alphabetical which makes it a nice surprise when I find a CD or DVD selection that really intrigues me. I guess a different way of saying this is that, even for the occasional reader,  DigitalProTalk.com is full of surprises.

Another way to enjoy DigitalProTalk.com is to just browse through the post titles also included in the right column of the blog. Just pick any year, and then any month and then read through the titles. I'm sure you'll find something there that you like.

I've been thinking about changing DigitalProTalk.com header to read more simply:

DigitalProTalk – Stop on by, you'll always learn something here.

Thank You - BigI think that says it all.  So in closing, let me say once again THANK YOU!! to all of my DigitalProTalk.com readers. Thank you to LaDawn for allowing me to continue to take the time to post/research daily. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'll keep writing if you'll keep reading;~)

I'll see you again bright and early on Monday morning, all the pixels willing. Have a great weekend everybody.

Quick Hit Monday: BIG Crash; LIVE Webcasts; DPT Kudos; iPad Pushes Back; and More

Good Morning Everybody,

At least it's a much better morning than the one I woke to early Saturday. I had just checked in with my buddy who was going to be picking us from the airport Saturday evening and all was good to go with schedules.  We hadn't talked for over a week so it was good to visit with my old friend.

Now fast forward 8 hours to 2:30 a.m. early Saturday morning - it's my buddy again only this time with a lot more concern in his voice.  Certainly, I was hoping he and his family were OK.  Well they were, but my car wasn't.  It had been parked by the curb outside his home as it was convenient for him to have my car for our Saturday airport pick up.

He heard the loud crash about 2:00 a.m., jumped from his bed and headed outside to see what happened.  My car had been hit by a drunk driver at a high rate of speed, thrown back 10 feet into another parked car, and the driver of the green SUV sped away!  I listened in disbelief!!!  My car will probably be estimated by the insurance company as totaled!!!

DAZ Mercedes

Soooo.... Saturday morning had me calling rental agencies, car dealers, and checking CarMax and EBay for pricing on a replacement vehicle and all before we headed to the airport.  It still seemed a little surreal - I loved my car and wasn't looking to replace it any time soon.

Things change pretty quickly though, don't they?  We can certainly count our blessings that at least no one, that we know of, was injured. It baffles our imagination how the drunk driver drove off after the accident.  No, the police still haven't located him. So my friend didn't pick us up in my car Saturday evening, we headed to the Enterprise rental counter instead grabbed a rental till we get all this sorted out.

Digital Resource Center OK, I know you're feeling bad for me.  I know you would like to reach out and help in some way.   Well, I've got the perfect suggestion.  Please head over to our Digital Resource Center, check out all the good deals, and take advantage of some of the great specials going on right now - I need to make a down payment on a new car this week and need all the help I can get ;~)

OK, I’m only half joking.  People are safe, we were getting close to updating our automobile in the next couple years, and worrying about it will not solve a thing.  I guess, like they say,  it's all part of the grand plan.  Uhmmm... I am kind of looking forward to checking out a few new models ;~)

On with Quick Hit Monday....  Lot's of cool FREE stuff happening on the web.

Speedliting Live! Webcast

Speedliting Live That's right, my good buddy and now best selling author, Syl Arena, is presenting his Speedliting Live webcast [link] this Thursday, March 3, 2011. Syl has writhed the definitive, no holds barred, book on speed lighting entitled, "The Speedlighter's Handbook".  Speedlighters HAndbookIt's hanging in there quite well at Amazon and should be close to a second printing.

Hearing Syl first hand and in person should be quite the treat for all those joining him [link] March 3, 2011 7p.m. PST - that's 10p.m. EST. He's using a brand new web service to pull it off which even allows questions from the live audience.  It should prove to be a very cool session.

FREE Photoshop Webcast

John Wright, at Media Wright Workshops is also presenting a FREE Photoshop webcast on March 10, 2011.  Seating is limited on this one so you'll want to sign up early to be sure you have a seat.  Here is the lowdown:

Photoshop programThere are several new features in Photoshop CS5 worth learning about. You may of already heard of the features but haven't had a chance to see just how they work. The discussion will center around Content Aware Fill, the Puppet Warp feature, Mini-Bridge and the Refine Edge changes. Tune in. It's free. But you do need to register.

You can get all the info and register right here. By the way, Media Wright has several of their past episodes archived too so check them out if you missed them.  Hey, you can never stop learning,

About The The Best Price Ever For Online Backup

Evernote So I was working away on my iPad last week pounding the keys in Evernote, an app that is quickly becoming my most used favorite app.  Everrnote has the habit of popping an ad or two in while you're working.  It's all very discreet and don't bother me one bit.

Crash Plan Anyway, the ad that caught my eye was from Crash Plan, a new online backup service.  I decided to check it out.  A few mouse clicks later, I was hooked on giving it a try.  Their business model is to offer totally unlimited online backup for only $3/month - unbelievably inexpensive, especially for a photographer with lots of images to archive.

I know what you're thinking, "It will take days to get 1 terabyte of data uploaded!" Well, I agree but they have a work-a-round whereby they send you a 1T disc which you load up with 1.5T of data, (compressed) and send it off to them.  They seed your account with the disc data and from that point on, you just let Crash Plan take over and keep all your data safely up to date.

It looks pretty cool to me.  I signed up - I'll keep you posted.  Here is the link to all their info.

Kudos To DigitalProTalk

PhotoVerse I was doing my daily iPad web cruise using the app PhotoVerse, which is by the way, very efficient way to follow your favorite blogs and hit a Pixiq link listing the Top 150 Un-missable Photo Blog sites.  Much to my surprise, I found DigitalProTalk listed at #38 with some very nice comments [link].  My sincere THANKS to all DPT readers who invite and encourage me to write every day with their loyal support.  And my thanks to Pixiq for acknowledging the effort.

iPad Calendar Pushes Back

Calendar Sync Does anybody feel the way I do - I love my Google calendar pushing to my IPad calendar but I hate the fact that my iPad calendar only updates when I sync up with iTunes…. which I never do, BTW.

Anyway, I figured there had to be a solution to the inconvenience.  After a little web searching I found this post at Island In The Net that gives you the road map to making the problem go away.  I haven't given it a try yet, but I surely will once the second generation of the iPad comes out this week.  The functionality will make it that much easier for us road warriors to collaborate with our staff back home.  Anyway, check it out right here.

Is Anybody Listening

DAZ TwitterTalk Everyday I get several notes telling me that folks are following me on Twitter - I'm very grateful, THANK YOU again!  But what I would like to know is this - do you, my DPT reader like the Twitter sidebar widget here on the blog?

I think it's an easy convenient way for me to point you towards some cool content without having to make a blog post out of it.  I am like always hitting my Facebook, Twitter, and blog FACS for cool news items.  The DPT Twitter bar makes it easy for me to get the info out to you even if you don't follow me on Twitter.  Anyway, just thought I’d inquire as nobody has ever commented on it for the entire time it's been up.

Hey gang, that’s it for me today.  I’m catching a plane to Tampa and heading to NAPP World Headquarters for a special project today ;~)  How about I catch up with everyone tomorrow for another episode of Technique Tuesday.

Quick Hit Monday: Updates, Updates, Updates!

Good Morning Everybody,

I hope Santa was good to everyone over the holidays and you had a chance to just relax the long weekend away. We managed to get the 300 image custom bound album delivered to my client by Christmas Eve - but just barely. I finished it with just 2 hours to spare - whew!  We are now wrapping up the New Year's card they need by Thursday of this week. Sometimes things never end ;~)

Hey gang, today I thought I'd give you a few updates on some good things happening around here for the new year. Here we go...

Santa Brought Me A Canon 100mm F2.8 IS Macro Lens For Christmas!

Canon 100mm ISSanta was pretty good to me this past Christmas - he left me Canon's brand new 100mm F2.8 IS under the tree.  I actually used it for my Christmas Day image right here.

I have to tell you, this is one of Canon's sharpest lenses. At least that is the results I’m finding from the testing I've seen on it [link]. Yes, it is one of their L-series lenses too and we know what "L" stands for, don't we - "Lots of bucks."

I've always thought that the next best place for Image Stabilization should be on a macro lens.  Why, because close up, the "lens jiggle" is similar to the experience on a long telephoto.  I'm glad Canon finally took me up on my suggestion;~)  I can't wait to take it out on a test drive real soon. I'll keep you posted.

Look For DigitalProTalk Plus To Go Live In 2010!

This has been a project I've been working on over the past year.  We're putting a brand new "member only" site together called DigitalProTalk Plus and I can't wait! DigitalProTalk Plus will not change anything that's happening with DigitalProTalk but, instead, will be an extension of the DPT site.

Digital ProTalk Plus The new site will allow me a means to share with you longer tutorials on lighting and photography.  It also gives me the chance to interact  with the members more easily with free conferences, reduced pricing on webinars, and special training. I’m still working out details.

I also want to include a "Print Critique" section, too. Members will have the opportunity to submit prints and I'll review them anonymously for all members. This too is still in the process of working out the logistics.

Lots more in the works too.  If you've got some ideas or suggestions in how to bring added value to membership, please let me know in the "Comments” section below – looking forward to hearing from you.

Digital WakeUp Call - A New Dawn Available ON DVD Soon!

DWUC DVDs We received so many great reviews for my DWUC tour that folks have been clamoring for it to be available on DVD.  Here is the really good news.  The DWUC tour was recorded live so you will get a chance to see all the fun and excitement of the tour.

More than that though, I've added 2 more hours of content to the 3 DVD set.  It should run about 6 hours long making it a great reference for anyone who attended and needs a refresher course. For those of you who were unable to attend - well, now you can.

I think this is the most exciting DVD series I've ever produced. Look for the release date to be early/mid January 2010.

__________________________________________________________

Hey gang, that's it for me today.  We're wrapping up the last of the client projects for the year and, who knows, might run out and see Avatar in 3D later today;~)

See everybody tomorrow for another episode of Technique Tuesday.

See ya' then,  -David

Favorite Things Friday’s - My 2000 DPT Post!

Good Afternoon Everybody,

2000-Fireworks - iStock_000004279531XSmall I knew I was getting close but today is the day.  Yep, it’s my 2000th post here at DigitalProTalk.com! That means to date at DigitalProTalk that you can read over 1.4 million words on  Photography, Lighting, Photoshop, Lightroom, Business Building, Sales, and Marketing – and most ALL of it is original content!

You can view over 500 “Image of The Day” posts most with all the EXIF data and back story of each shot.

You can also view over 100 video tutorials on Lighting, Lightroom, Photography, and Photoshop posted over these last 24+ months.

So how many words is that? Well, if you had to read Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” in high school - as I did – and it was a long read totaling over 560,000 words, then DPT to date is well over twice as long.

1 - LaDawn 800x800 px IMG_0093a In those early days, it was tough to get the posts up on a daily basis.  Even today, many times, even when time is short, I always managed to get the posts up many times to the consternation of my blog editor.

And my blog editor? – Well, a GREAT BIG thanks goes to LaDawn who proofs nearly all the posts, correcting my miss-wording or miss-spellings along the way hopefully making things easier for you to read and understand each day.

DAZ and Scott It’s been quite a literary journey. I owe another giant thank you to my uber-blogging buddy, Scott Kelby, who encouraged me to give blogging a try more than two years ago.  Scott also gave me the most important piece of advice for blogging success, “If you don’t feed the MONSTER it will die.”  Thanks Scott for all your wisdom, advice and support along the journey.

It was Scott who emailed me early one Sunday morning after 18 months of “5-day a week” non-stop blogging and asked, “So, are you ready to write your book yet?” I was shocked at the prospect, but answered a cautious … Yes.DAZ Wedding Book

And the latest news - “Captured By The Light” was wrapped by Kelby Media yesterday and was shipped early yesterday evening to Peachpit Press for printing and publication!

Lastly, I want to thank all of you loyal DPT readers – 1.6 million visitors from over 198 countries worldwide and over 7000 strong nearly everyday! If you keep reading, sharing the blog and information, making your comments… I’ll keep writing!

Thanks everybody.  See ya’ on Monday with blog post #2001, David

Thoroughly Marvelous Monday

Good Morning Everybody,
After 6 months of blogging, I think DigitalProTalk is starting to hit it's stride. I wanted to share with you my plans for how the blog is shaping up and getting organized. Let me explain;

  • Monday will be an Open post day with any posts pertinent to photography falling into Monday's line up.

  • Tuesday, of course will be Technique Tuesday featuring tutorials on lighting, photography, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.

  • Wednesday has morphed into "As The Photo World Turns Wednesday." I got the "Oldies But Goldies " series starting this week for 12 weeks - so you get the idea.

  • Thursday is shaping up nicely as B(Business) Day Thursday and is becoming one of my favorite days to post. I love this business, sales, marketing tips and information.

  • Friday will continue to be "Inspiration Friday" and feature photo stories on creativity and the creative process, photography, and design. It's about getting your "brain juices" flowing.
