Technique Tuesday: Extreme Digital Design With Special Guest Michael Sheasby – CEO LumaPix

Good Morning Everybody,

DAZ Class workingThis is the second day for us at Texas School.  Once again, they have quite a crowd here – with instructors, staff, and vendors – almost 1,100 people from 40 states and 4 countries worldwide! We kicked off the day yesterday with the class starting at 8:30 a.m.  We spent most of the time in class reviewing lighting and composition.  Then we gave the class a crack at trying some of the lighting techniques I discussed earlier in the day – all good stuff.

After we wrapped the class time it was off to the Cowboy Dance Club for a barbeque dinner and a little dancin’ Texas style.  The party went to 11:00 p.m. and most everybody was back at the hotel by midnight.

For the instructors it’s a long day because we’re the ones that have to get up extra bright and early, and get ready for the next day’s class and, for some of us, even get a blog post out :~)  Anyway… it’s all good fun.

Today we are on location all day, then dinner this evening. No that is not the end of the day.  After that, in Texas School tradition, there’s another party that kick’s off at 9:00 and goes to 1:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.  Next year, I want to be a student  at Texas School!  I don’t want to lead you onto believing that we’re having a ton of fun here or anything like that - so I better get on with today’s Technique Tuesday.  Here we go…

Extreme Digital Design With Special Guest Michael Sheasby – CEO LumaPix

Webcast3Last Thursday I think we had one of our best webcasts featuring Michael Sheasby along with myself and our Chief of Design, LaDawn.  Michael is  Cofounder and CEO of LumaPix, the absolute best design and collage software available anywhere!  Michael was gracious enough to spend a little over 90 minutes with all those tuned in showing us the latest features in the newly released LumaPix V5.

We had photographers attending from nearly all 50 states including Hawaii and from 10 countries around the world including Australia, Brazil, Denmark, Angola, Italy, England, Israel, Mexico, Canada, and Germany! It was truly an international event!  My thanks to all who participated and especially to Michael and LaDawn who made it such a well rounded webcast.

Here are a few comments from the attendees:

A GREAT WEBINAR! … Thanks, I enjoyed the Webinar.  already have 5v and love it. …  It is definitely a BIG time saver!!!!!! … Thanks for a great webinar!  It’s a FABULOUS piece of software that has saved me a TON of time…..Anyway, you get the idea. Why not hit the PLAY button below and enjoy the show one more time.

Oh, BTW, we’ve got some special offers on LumaPix for anyone interested – like how you can get LumaPix for only $99 – that’s right, $99.  But you’ll have to call LaDawn at 800.292.2994 or email her at ladawn@ziser.com for details.  If you love what you see, please give her a call.

________________________________________________________________

Hey gang, that’s it for me today.  It’s a really long day – of course that’s including party #2 this evening. So, I better get moving.  Boy…. do I love my job ;~)

Have a great one, and I might see you tomorrow but probably not too early (depending on how this evening goes.)

Worldwide Webcast PhotoPro Expo 2012 Print Competition Re-Broadcasting Today!

Good Afternoon Everybody,

PPE Print Comp Streaming LiveSo many requests, so little time! Print Competition is  the best way to learn how to compose a better image.  It was a huge influencing factor when I first started my business years ago.  When you raise the bar on your own work, it raises the bar on your client work, too – a WIN-WIN for everybody!

So today is the BIG day – I’m re-running the afternoon session of our worldwide webcast of our PhotoPro Expo 2012 Print Competition – about 3 1/2 hours long.  I know it sounds like a long time but just watch it on your iPad while doing your regular work as so many did during our broadcast.

During the broadcast, my good friend and very successful studio owner, Ralph Romaguera, and I commented wherever we could to bring more clarity to the various aspects of print competition.  Said differently, we did kind of a “play-by-play” of the print competition. This recording has great information.  Don’t miss it.

In spite of the few bugs we encountered, it was a huge hit with our viewers.  I haven’t completed the final count, but the webcast was watched by nearly 400 people is dozens of countries worldwide!  Today is your chance to be part of the fun!

BTW, be sure to check out the Print Competition Related Links at the end of the post.

A Few Comments From The “LIVE” Worldwide Audience

"Got to tell you that was wonderful ... loved the whole process.  Thank you for doing it. I watched most of the day off and on."  Dave J.

WorldwideWebcast5"I watched the web cast all day on my iPad2. While not full screen, the photos had great resolution and accurate colors.  Had the iPad in landscape mode below my monitor while setting up a photo order.  I carried it around the house with me, and was able to keep up with the judging where ever I went.

Using the Apple HDMI adapter, I ran the video through my plasma mv while on the recumbent bike.  The video quality was excellent.
I learned a lot.  It was a great success."
  Ed M.

"The webcast was great - listening to the challenges was awesome for learning what the judges look for and consider when assigning  ratings.  Nice job for being the first time."   Patti D.

Desicions"I totally love the idea of showing the print judging. Anyone wanting to learn about photography owes it to themselves to attend these types of events and I always encourage my students to attend the local association judging. Thank you so much for doing this."  Len G.

"Thanks for sponsoring that amazing webinar!   I was glued to the screen for about 1/2 of the time but if I'd realized how good it was going to be, I would have rescheduled all my appointments for the day and just focused on it!  I did get to watch about 1/2 of it on and off through the whole day and had some other people watching with me and they loved it too.

I love print competitions, I just don't get to go to enough of them.  I found myself trying to anticipate the judges score and most of the time I got within two points.  Sometimes,  I was way off, but it made it way more fun!"   Kevin and Tammy B.

"I am convinced watching any competition helps improve my shooting and I hope your example is followed by other states.  Cheers."  Rick

"Thank you for setting up this wonderful experience! I learned so much from the judges comments and what qualities they were looking for to make an exceptional image! I just loved that opportunity!

Time To LearnThank you again, it was a real treat and fantastic teaching tool. I appreciate you and all your training through you seminars and blogs!!!"  Brenda

"I really enjoyed viewing and listening to the print competition yesterday.  I listened to the whole thing on my laptop while I worked at my regular job.  It was very helpful and informative.  As the prints came up, I began to try and give my own print score to see how it compared with the judges.

Sometimes I was right on and other times I was way off and I could not understand how they arrived at the score. (When they did not discuss a challenge.)  I studied all of the prints and also how they were cropped and matted.  This all was extremely interesting.

Print Comp2

I hope that you can do this again and more often.   I also appreciate all of the time that you spend to pass on your valuable experience to others.  Thanks."  Fred

Enjoy the Re-broadcast Everybody

I couldn’t get the project to render in Camtasia today.  It was just too large a file and crashed the computer twice. I’ve uploaded the raw footage of the webcast without my intro and exit clips. At least you’ll get the idea. Hope that works for you. Sorry I couldn’t get it posted the way I wanted for our DPT readers. I’ll work on it some more when I get some more time.

It’s not perfect but still good content. -David

Friday Wrap Up: Webcast A Big Hit; Captured By The Light Only A Week Away; Awesome Retouching Tools!

Good Morning Everybody,

I just want to kick off today's post with a great big THANK YOU to Suzette Allen for her fabulous webcast yesterday.  I don't think I have ever seen so many great comments come across the wire while we were on the air - the attendees just loved it!

Suzette’s Webcast A Hit!

Suzette StoreI think the secret to the success of Suzette’s program was her down to earth approach to teaching - no fluff, just solid, rapid fire tips you can use everyday in your Photoshop workflow.  I know, I know - everyone wants to know if it will be re-broadcast.  I'm planning to work on that over the weekend.  In the mean time, check out Suzette’s additional training materials right here.  Things are going to be super busy for me next week with my Master Class kicking off on Monday, but I'll do my best to find some time to get Suzette’s webcast and next week’s post up on line.

I'm keeping it short and sweet today because LaDawn and I leave our friends, the Smith's, today and head to Toledo, OH for a family wedding this afternoon.  We head back to Cincy tomorrow and prep for my class on Monday.  I’m happy to say we have another full class with photographers coming in from all around the country once again.  I'm really looking forward to a great week.  I'll keep you updated as we progress thru the week.

Captured By The Light California 2012

I can't believe it!  We kicked off Captured By The Light California 2012 tour just last Thursday and we have quite a number of folks registered still with nearly 2 weeks to go before we hit the west coast.

CBTL2012Once again, we’re giving away $600 worth of goodies to everyone walking through the door including a complete recording of the program with additional tutorials!  And YES, we’re giving away $1000’s worth of door prizes each night!  You’re going to love it!

We're trying something different this year with how we're getting the word out so if these three cities do as well as we hope, you just may get your wish and see us out next year at a city near you.

Retouching Salvation!

Perfect Photo 6A quick note - you've heard me talk about OnOne's new Perfect Photo Suite 6, the next big tool to workflow success in my opinion, since we've sat in on two webcasts highlighting the latest features of the program. I have to tell you, I'm really stoked to see the the final release.

I thought I would have a Beta release to be testing by now, but no luck for this lonely PC user.  I just spoke with OnOne the other day though and it looks like I may get a real peek shortly.  If you want a preview of some of those great new features, OnOne is posting a one a day video highlighting those features right here.  I really encourage you to check them out -WAY cool stuff.

________________________________________________________

Hey gang, that's it for me today.  I'm going to try to get my 5 mile workout in today - OK, 3 mile workout ;~). and then it's off to Toledo and catching up with family and friends at tonight’s  wedding.

Everybody have a great weekend and I'll see you bright and early on Monday.  Keep your lenses polished, your CMOS sensors clean, and your pixels smilin',

See ya' next week everybody,  David

Social Media Marketing: Do It Or Die! Re-broadcast

Good Morning Everybody,

We officially announced my Captured By The Light California 2011 tour yesterday [link].  Right away I received emails asking us to bring the tour to other cities as well.  Heck, I wish I could bring the tour to a lot more cities but the way hotel and travel costs have escalated over the last few years, it makes it a little tougher to do.

CBTL Web LogoThis time around we are promoting the CBTL 2011 tour by email notices only.  And, making your registration the "deal of the century" by including a full, extended content DVD of my entire presentation.  Each attendee get the full recorded DVD of my presentation and me for only $59 (with Promo Code CBLDZ11).  That should really cut down the note taking chores at our three California stops.  Again, you can register right here.

If this concept is successful, we just may hit the road and visit several more cities next year, Canada included.  Anyway, help spread the word and let's see if we can get this off to a great start.  I'd love to visit a lot of the cities we missed last year.

Social Media Marketing: Do It Or Die! Re-broadcast

Social Media Marketing TitleEvery time we do a webcast at DPT, I know schedules being what they are, many can't attend at the posted webcast time.  That's why I like to get the re-broadcast online whenever possible.  We are doing just that today with social media guru, A.J. Wood's webcast he did for us last week.  This is a great opportunity for you to tune in, especially if you missed it, and gain the knowledge and reap the benefits of A.J.'s well received program.

AJ WoodWe were unable to answer all the questions during the presentation so I have forwarded all the inquiries to A.J. where he will answer as many as possible at his site right here.  His website is jammed pack with solid info so you'll want to bookmark it anyway - tons of good info available.

Visit with Zach and Jody Grey – Webcast Coming!

zach-and-jody-gray2 Last week I received a quick e-mail from Zach and Jodi Gray, two photographers who are traveling with David Jay on his cross country PASS tour. They have also been voted BEST Photographers in Nashville, TN. We made the drive, several weeks ago, to Indianapolis and really enjoyed their program. I was just amazed by the depth of knowledge, understanding, and sales maturity these two young photographers shared with their audience.

They were heading back back home from Indianapolis and could they drop by for a cup of coffee on Friday. I jumped at the opportunity to get together with them again. They managed to land at my studio around 2:00 p.m.  We headed to Starbucks and just had a great visit for a couple of hours.

In the course of the conversation I asked them if they would be interested in doing a webcast at DigitalProTalk - they graciously obliged. I'm telling you, this will be one of the best webcasts you've heard and I can't wait to get it scheduled. So stay tuned.

Technique Tuesday: Lightroom Secrets Revealed: Auto Mask Magic

Good Morning Everybody,

We've only got two more days in the city and then we head back home on Thursday morning. Yesterday did not go quite as planned.  We worked in our hotel room into the early afternoon and finally left the hotel around 3:00 p.m.

Rainy DayThe minute we hit the street we saw that there was a slight drizzle coming down – back to the room to grab an umbrella.  I bought one from one the several street vendors that miraculously appear the moment raindrops begin to fall. We joined the NYC umbrella-ed masses.

LaDawn suggested a walk up to the Metropolitan Museum of Art – heck, it was only 35 blocks away, it was raining – why not, and off we went. About 45 minutes later and only a block or two away I pulled up the website and saw – Whoops! – the Museum is closed on Monday.

With it still raining, we heading back the 2 miles to the hotel in even heavier falling rain.  Oh well, we got our exercise in for the day.  We’ve walked about 20 miles through  NYC so far.  Oh, did I mention that the “cheap” umbrella I purchased 3 hours earlier was falling apart on me as we walked back.  What a day – I just began humming that song from Annie, “The Sun Will Come Up Tomorrow…” ;~)

Time to get moving with this week's brand new Technique Tuesday.  Here we go.

Amazing Secrets Of Lightroom 3 - Making The Adjustment Brush Auto Mask Actually Work

Lightroom's Auto Mask feature in the Adjustment Brush pallet has been frustrating at best.  I just wish it would work as promised.  I'm a heavy handed retoucher meaning that I like to get the job done quickly and efficiently but still without compromise.  With my heavy handed use, I sometimes tend to leave a halo around some of the edges of buildings against skies in some of my projects.  I'm usually able to finesse around the issue but that means using precious extra time.

But in today's tutorial I want to share with you how I got the Adjustment Brush's Auto Mask feature to work beautifully.  It's all a matter of thinking in reverse, thinking backwards as it were.  I’m hinting at what I recently discovered about the Auto Mask feature.  Why not hit the PLAY button below and check out my new Lightroom secret.  Prepared to be amazed!  OK, maybe that's over the top a bit, but I still think you'll like this short tip.  Enjoy!

Hey gang, that's it for me today.  Hope you'll join me on tomorrow's webcast.  And don't forget to register for the Sales webcast next week with Chuck Lewis.  I'm letting the world know via email next week and I suspect the seats will go fast. Our DPT readers have first notice - just remember, if you snooze, you might just lose a space;~)

And, don't forget to check back in tomorrow for the beginning of my brand new Photography/Lighting Series – “It Was The Best Of Days, It Was The Worst Of Days - How To Get Your Best Image Under Any Conditions.”

Business Day Thursday: Engage With The Engaged; & 72+ $2,600 Weddings

Good Afternoon Everybody,

Chuck Lewis Lots of goods things happening around here these days.  Yesterday I spent some time on the phone with Chuck Lewis, one of my first big influences in the photographic profession.  Years ago, I was the young photographer who volunteered to give Mr. Lewis a ride back to the airport from our state convention.  During the trip from Lexington, KY I asked him if he would mind coming by my residential studio and checking out my studio.  He graciously obliged and we made a quick stop.

What A Difference A Word Or Two Can Make!

I had only been in business a few years and was just learning the ropes photography-wise and sales-wise.  Chuck strolled through my sales area, my living room, paged through my favorite wedding album sample book and proclaimed that it was a $2,000 wedding album!!! I was blown away, I had just recently sold the album for about $750, far short of what Chuck had valued it.

Cheshire Cat At Chuck's seminar, he told the story about Alice meeting the Cheshire Cat at a crossroads in the classic story,  Alice In Wonderland.  Alice asked which way to go.  The Cheshire Cat responded with, "Well, where do you want to go?" Alice responded that she didn't know where she wanted to go.  To which the Cheshire Cat responded, " If you don't know where you're going, then how can I tell you which way to go?"

The story hit me like a bombshell - I was trying to be all things photographic and was spinning my wheels in many directions on most of them.  Chuck's story and his remark about the value of my wedding album did two things: First, it made me decide what I wanted to specialize in.  Like Alice, I had to decide which way I wanted to go if I was going to get there.  I chose to put all my energy and efforts to building my wedding photography business and drop all the extraneous endeavors chewing up my time.

The next thing I did was set a goal to do 50 weddings at $2,000 within the next 5 years. I set that goal in 1982. We hit it 4 years later by photographing over 70 weddings with a $2,600 average!  I owe a lot of that early success to the early influence and wise words of Chuck Lewis.

Anyway, that's the back story.  I had an interview with Chuck a few months ago for his Photographers Inner Circle group.  The interview was quite a hit with his members and he offered to return the favor by doing a sales webcast with me.  You do not want to miss this.  We've scheduled it for August 4, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. DST.  We're setting up the registration process as we speak.  I'll get the details to you as soon as we have them firmed up which should be in the next few days, so stay tuned.

PhotoWalks and Webcasts With Animoto

Combo4 And speaking of webcasts, LaDawn and I are heading to NYC in about 2 weeks for a little R&R.  During that visit I'll be doing a PhotoWalk for PPA Charities Operation Smile and for our good buddies at Animoto on the morning of July 23, 2011.  I'll also be doing a webcast from Animoto's World Headquarters on July 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.

We are just nailing down the plans as we speak. Look for all the details next week right here at DPT.  Looks like fun times in the city coming up ;~).  I hope if you’re in the area you can join me on the Photowalk and if you are within listening range you’ll be able to join me on the webinar.

Business Day Thursday: Engage With The Engaged

Jody and Zach Last week I mentioned that we attended David Jay's PASS Premiere seminar series in Indianapolis, IN.  It was a great program but our favorite speakers were Zach and Jody Gray.  These guys had their sales/marketing act together.  I promised to share a few of the tantalizing tidbits of their program with you.  That's the plan for today.

First of all, let me say that their approach to marketing is very personalized and organic.  They work at creating lasting relationships with their clients, relationships that will endure long past the wedding celebration.  The bottom line is that they want to give their clients  a great studio experience.  As Howard Schultz, Starbucks Coffee founder said, " We're not in the coffee business serving people. We are in the people business serving coffee."  Change the word "coffee" to "photography" and you get the drift of how they market themselves.

The Inquiry Phone Call

It begins with how they engage their clients during that first inquiry phone call.  Here are Zach and Jody's top 5 ways to engage with the client on that first phone call.

Happy -iStock_000002274405XSmall1. Smile when talking on the phone - it comes through in your inviting tone of voice.  Right actions lead right feelings.

2. Establish a personal connect with the caller - get them to talk about themselves.  Ask them to tell you their story. How did they meet?  When did they know he/she was the one?  How are their wedding plans shaping up?  Are their families just as excited?

You get the idea - it's Zach and Jody talking about them and not Zach and Jody talking about themselves, at least not yet.  This is an important part of the engagement process.  It's about letting the client get comfortable talking with you.

3. Engage with the details - get them talking about things they enjoy.  What kind of flowers do they like?  Have they got they wedding menu sorted out yet - what are they thinking of? Have they been looking at gowns/tuxedos, what have they seen that they love?  Wedding venues - any big favorites?  Affirm their choices without recommending any of yours just yet.  Right now, you are being a good listener.  Remember, it's still all about the client - nothing about your studio (just yet).

EarPeople enjoy talking about themselves, we all do.  Spend about 20 minutes or more letting them tell you about themselves and really listening.  That time continues to build their comfort level with you.

4. Now you get to move closer into telling them about you but first ask, "Tell us what your looking for in your wedding photography".  Hopefully it will be a good fit and you can continue to affirm that what they are looking for is exactly what you offer and maybe even more.

5.   Now its time to share about yourself.  Tell past clients wedding related stories. Relate with your own personal stories and experiences about your own wedding.  This helps strengthen  the relationship process you've begun in the first part of the phone call.

6. After they've told their story and you've told yours, it's time to offer your prices to them.  Give them your range from lowest to highest. Then ask the question, "Does this sound like what you're looking for?" And then be quiet!  This is called a trial close.  If the client is comfortable with you and your prices you may book the wedding right on the spot.

7. Getting to the objection.  If the client hesitates simply ask the question, "What is your hesitation?". Their answer gives you an opportunity to answer the objection and move onto the sale.  If the objection is price, throw in a variable.  That variable for Zach and Jody is a complimentary engagement session.  They are basically layering more value into their quoted price to overcome the price objection.

Even if they don't close on the phone call, they set up an in studio meeting with the client at that time. The fact that the client is setting the appointment is a buying signal and will probably lead to the close happening during that follow up meeting.

Engaged The main thing I want to point out about Zach and Jody's philosophy concerning engaging the engaged is that the focus of most of the phone conversation is about the client doing most of the talking - telling their story.  And in doing so building up a comfort level with Zach and Jody.  The bottom line is this.  People like doing business with trusted friends.  It's up to us to build that trust with our clients and respect and honor that trust as we continue our relationship with them.  It's the perfect place to be if you want to enjoy success in any business.

Times Square – Bert Monroy’s Discusses His Epic Work; & FREE Fusion Webcast Tomorrow

Good Morning Everybody,

TsunamiOMG – what a day yesterday turned into.  I sat down at the computer yesterday at 7:00 a.m., two computers BTW, and didn’t quit till  8:30 p.m.  Between getting ready for my upcoming Digital Master Class next week, preparing for the Fusion webcast tomorrow, and working on several projects for our PhotoPro Network – it felt like a Tsunami of work hitting me all at once.

With all that behind me today, thankfully is a little lighter, whew!

Times Square – Bert Monroy’s Discusses His Epic Work

Let me begin by saying that I am so excited about today’s post. I spent a good deal of time working on it yesterday because I wanted it to be a special experience for our DPT readers – I hope it is.

I caught up with Bert last week at Photoshop World in Orlando, Florida.  Bert’s opus digital painting “Times Square” [link] was being displayed full size and back-lit for the first time. As I said last week, seeing this 5 ft. x 25 ft. backlit photorealistic digital painting up close and personal was quite the stunningly visual experience.

I asked Bert if he could visit with me on the entire 4 year process of creating such a masterpiece. He graciously obliged.  In the conversation we talked about the computer horsepower needed to produce an image created pixel-by-pixel in Photoshop, problems encountered along the way, who appears in the image, pushing the last pixel into place, and his own personal experience in seeing the project displayed for the first time.

I watched the video several times and am still totally impressed with what Bert has accomplished.  I know you will be too.  Hit the PLAY button below and enjoy the show.

Fusion – Now More Than Ever!

We are ready to go for tomorrow’s webcast. Don’t forget to REGISTER RIGHT HERE!

I was on the phone with our presenter, Ariane Fisher a few hours yesterday working out a few bugs – but late last night, we squished the last few of those bugs and all is looking good for tomorrow’s broadcast.

Dollars LR Here is a quick update – StoryMix Media has generously agreed to give two door prizes valued at $200/ea during the program – Thanks StoryMix Media.  We will be awarding the prizes live during the program. To be eligible to win, during the broadcast you’ll need to send a Tweet to @DigitalProTalk or @StoryMixMedia and include #FusionNow in the tweet.

It should be fun.  The Twitter Feed for questions is a little new to me but Ariane wanted to give it a try so we are.  I’ll be following the tweets on my iPad during our program.  Ariane will be following as well on her end.  It will be a great way to send questions to Ariane or to myself during the webcast tomorrow.  Don’t you just love technology ;~) __________________________________________________________

Hey gang, that’s it for me today. I can’t believe it’s Wednesday and the week is half gone.  Things are just a little too busy after being away for two weeks.  As president of PhotoPro Network, I’m working on plans for our PPN Summer School in July, another meeting in October, and our annual convention next February 2012.

Now having just mentioning these events, I can’t give you any detailed information on them just yet – I’m still working on websites, but I promise I will everything together very shortly – you will be blown away!!!!

The Sedona Experience 2 Oh, BTW, my team tells me that we are nearly full for my private workshop – “The Sedona Experience” [link]. – If you’re interested, please give Jennifer or LaDawn a call at 800.292.2994 right away.

Plan to stop back tomorrow for another episode of Business Day Thursday.  I’ll be wrapping our series on wedding salesflow/workflow with my post, “After The Wedding – Workflow Part 7 – Let The Designing Begin!”

Hope to see you then,  David
