Look3 – Festival Of The Photograph–What An Experience!

Good Afternoon Everybody,

LaDawn and I are taking a small break from the Studio and visiting in the Williamsburg, VA area. We have been here for about a week refreshing our memories and soaking up all the wonderful history of the area.  In addition to following our history interests, we also made the short trip to Charlottesville, VA this past Saturday to attend Look3 – The Festival of the Photograph [link], a very interesting photography conference featuring photographers many of us in the portrait/wedding realm would not have heard of.

During our visit we had the opportunity to see the photography and hear the presentation and world famous Josef Koudelka. During a visit to the Modern Museum of Art in NYC a few years ago, we had the opportunity to get familiar with Josef’s work – I was blown away by is instinct to capture the perfect moment and stunning composition.  I ended up buying several of his books for my photo library.

Koudelka Image

Josef Koudelka [link] was thirty years old in 1968. He had committed himself to photography as a full-time career only recently, and had been chronicling the theater, and the lives of gypsies, but he had never photographed a news event. That all changed on the night of August 21, when Warsaw Pact tanks invaded the city of Prague, ending the short-lived political freedom in Czechoslovakia that came to be known as the Prague Spring. In the midst of the turmoil of the Soviet-led invasion, Koudelka took to the streets to document this critical moment. Now 75 years old and still full of energy and creativity he finished his presentation to a standing ovation – pretty darn exciting.

Check out his work right here and be prepared to be amazed!!!

We head out on Friday and work our way up to Mount Vernon eventually catching up with our friend Jeff Medford, the producer of Alex Buono’s fabulous new tour traveling the country as we speak.  Alex is an Oscar nominee, film maker, and Director of Photography for Saturday Night Live.

See ya’ soon!

Technique Tuesday: Napa Update; and Getting The Perfect Portrait Every Time

Good Morning Everybody,

Napa2We kicked off my Napa Experience Workshop yesterday in Wine Country and wrapped last night about 9:30 p.m.  That made for a long day as usual but we captured some terrific images.  I have to tell you, it was quick the kick to be shooting in some of the top wineries in the world.

We headed over to Napa arriving for a  quick lunch at V. Sattui Winery, a Napa winery celebrating it’s 125 anniversary in the area.  Years ago on a trip to Napa, V. Sattui was the first winery I ever visited.  It was nice to be back there again.

V. Sattui was gracious enough to let us spend the afternoon roaming their beautiful grounds.

Later we headed down the road and finished up the afternoon and evening photographing on location at the very beautiful 135 year old Beringer Winery.  The Beringer Winery was a real joy in which to photograph.  We photographed till dark and could have stayed much longer.

Napa1Today we head up to Jacuzzi Winery and Chateau St Jean in Sonoma valley for the day.  I can’t wait!

Only A Few Seats Left For My Captured By The Light Tour Tomorrow Night

That’s right, we are nearly sold out for our CBTL program at Rohnert Park tomorrow evening.  Our meeting room has seating for 150 attendees and we only have about 15 seats available.  If you want to grab one before they’re sold out, you better jump on it quick. You can still REGISTER RIGHT HERE!

CBTL Web LogoWe’re giving away $3,000 worth of door prizes and a complete video recording of the entire program  Seminars don’t get any better than that.  I liked what I read in an email from one of our attendees in Brea, CA,  “Wow!  I won one of the big door prizes and you gave us 5 DVDs of the entire program.  It’s like you paid ME to show up!”

People are loving the program – hopefully you’ll be able to join us tomorrow evening.

Technique Tuesday: Getting The Perfect Portrait Every Time

Hey gang, I’ve been working on a pretty cool tutorial for my Technique Tuesday post but time just ran out to get it up today.  I could have rushed it but didn’t want to.  So, for this week I’m going to share one of our most popular videos with you from a few months ago.

I’ve mentioned Kent and Sarah Smith here at DigitalProTalk.com many times in the past.  Kent and Sarah operate one of the most successful studios in the country – yes, they are one of those very few $1,000,000 studios, actually tracking for 1.1 Mil this year.  Needless to say, they know what they are doing both photographically and business-wise.

Wouldn't it be great to know how to get perfect portraits every time, portraits that guarantee perfect expressions on everyone including the children? Check out this portrait tutorial with my friends, Kent and Sarah Smith, two of the most talented portrait photographers working today, to see how simply and easily they make that perfect portrait session happen every time.  Enjoy!

Hey gang, that’s it for me today.  Class begins shortly and I’ve got to run.  How about I see everybody bright and early again tomorrow.  Have a great rest of the day.

Business Day Thursday: Should You Keep The Deposit Money?

Good Afternoon Everybody,

Last night we tried something very different.  We held a special GoToMeeting session for the 6 photographers attending my Sedona Experience - Private Seminar a couple of weeks ago.  It was great.  We were all on-line having a great time, reminiscing, laughing, and reviewing the images we all made during that very special seminar.

Lush, Ripe Wine Grapes with Mist Drops on the VineThe cool thing about our meeting, even though we were connected via the Internet, was still s intimate a get together as one could expect.  It was like we were all in the same room back in Sedona. Our get-together lasted about three hours and the time just flew by.

Our plan for future private workshops is to schedule the follow up meeting just like we had last night.  It will give all those attending a chance to ask additional questions and/or provide clarification after returning back to each individual home and an opportunity to get back together with friends made during the workshop.  I think the idea brings added richness to the entire private workshop experience.

Our next private workshop is being planned right now for the fall.  The name - The "Napa Experience".  If interested, drop me a line or call Jennifer at 859.341.5900 and we will be sure to follow up with you when we set dates.

Business Day Thursday:  Should You Keep The Deposit Money?

I recently received an email from DWF - The Digital Wedding Forum.  The headline asked the same question I have in today's BDT post. I didn't get a chance to read their article, but it did bring up memories of how we've done things over the years at David A. Ziser Photography.

Money So, a client books you for their wedding date.  You collect a sizable deposit - we collect approximately 25% of the total booking amount.  The agreement is completed and both parties sign the document.  Each receives a copy of the contract.  That's how it's worked for wedding photographers for years.

So now the big question, if the wedding cancels do you keep the deposit?  Nearly all wedding vendors do.  They claim that they had reserved that date and if a client cancels the wedding, there's no way to easily rebook it.  Keeping the deposit is a consolation prize at best for the lost revenue.

How do you feel about that?  Some of you may suggest partial refund if the date is canceled far enough in advance, say 6 months before the original date of the event.  In that 6 months you may think you have a decent chance of rebooking the date.  That may be more true today than in years past since brides and grooms are booking later than ever before.  Then again, many of you may say, "No refund at all - Period!"

We’ve had our policy in place for years and have never had any complaints from clients who needed to cancel a wedding for whatever unexpected reason.  Our policy has always been to never return a deposit - except in very extenuating circumstances, BUT....

BUT.... I personally never want to take anyone's money without performing some kind of service in return.  So how do we handle the matter in that rare instance when it occurs?  The responsibility for making the call to the client wanting to cancel has always fallen on my shoulders.

The first thing I want my client to know is the fact that they are very lucky to have booked with us in spite of the wedding cancellation.  They know very well that they lost all the deposits with just about all the other wedding vendors and are not expecting a different result from us.  But  a nice surprise awaits them as they definitely receive a different result from my studio.

I simply let the client know that we won't be returning the deposit, but their deposit converts into a studio credit that they can use anyway they chose to use it.  For example; they could use it toward a family portrait session and/or wall portraits.  We could just keep the credit on file and if the wedding plans change, we could apply it towards those new plans.

DAZNOTE: Years ago I booked a wedding as a referral from a good client.  About six months later, I get a all that the wedding was cancelled.  I explained our policy and the bride was relieved to know she wasn't going to lose the deposit.  It was in safe keeping as adiposity at the studio.

A year later she calls again, tells me she's getting married to another guy and wants to know if we have the date available.  We did and we booked the second wedding date for her.  Six months later, you guessed it, the second wedding was called off too.  The bride called slightly embarrassed to tell me the news, but felt fine when I assured her that her deposit was still on the books to use in anyway she chose to use it down the road.

To Have And To Hold You would think that was the end of the story - it's not.  About 8-10 months later she calls again - yes, she had secured fiancĂ© #3 - and inquired about date availability again.  We had the third date open and booked the third wedding date for the same bride.  Heck, it was no additional cost to her we just applied her studio credit as the deposit on the third wedding.

The good news is that I did shoot the wedding and as they left the Greater Cincinnati area and I unfortunately lost contact with them my desire is that everybody lived happily ever after - at least I hope so ;~)

The point is this.  We still got the business because of our relaxed policy on returned deposits.  I must tell you, our refund policy has worked like a charm for all these years.  It keeps the clients loyal to us.  Being told your not going to get your money back in a emotionally charged situation simply can't sit well with your prospective client.  If it was you, would you go back to the vendor who you may feel had "stiffed" you to some extent - I think not.

Our refund policy allows a softening of the blow about the lost monies because they simply are not lost.  They are just put on hold.  The bottom line is that we have ALWAYS continued our relationship with our clients who find themselves in this kind of a situation.  They always come back since we are always able offer additional services that they can use.

And heck, occasionally we were even able to re-book the original date.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you don't need a hard and fast policy on refunds.  It's helpful to you and your client if you relax the refund policy a bit.  The bottom line is that now you refund policy is in everyone's best interest.

- Thought you would like to know.

Quick Hit Monday: Lightroom, Photoshop, Photography, Education and More

Good Morning Everybody,

Hope everybody had a great weekend.  Things were pretty lazy around here over the weekend and we really enjoyed the break. But today is Monday and we are off and running for another week.

Gold Nuggets - LR Over the weekend break, I got a chance to just take some time surfing the net and looking for those little gold nuggets I get to post here at DPT.

Another nugget finder is Tweetdeck which is a great way to follow other Twitterers - at least those who tweet decent content.  There is so much junk available, why in the world would you care what someone was having for dinner or that they found a cow on Farmville?

Maybe it's just me, but I refuse to waste my time posting or reading that kind of "time wasting" content.  Sorry, I’m on my soapbox and getting a little off track.  How about we get on with today's post where I can point you towards another treasure trove of cool news, tips, and tricks you can use.  Here we go.

Lightroom - Tips and Freebies, What Could Be Nicer?

Thanks Gavin

Seim Effects There are a few folks I follow on Twitter who really provide some solid content for their readers.  I want to point you towards a few things I picked up from fellow blogging buddy, Gavin Seim. Gavin has more stuff, I mean information, going on than a 1 arm paperhanger - blogs, podcasts, tweets and more.

Gavin has posted this wonderfully extensive list of where to find FREE Lightroom Presets.  Here is Lightroom Freebie link right here.  Talk about a gold nugget!.

More From The Lightroom Queen

LR3 eBook Another great "gold nugget tosser" is the Lightroom Queen right here.  Victoria Brampton, who just happens to be called the LR Queen is one of Lightroom gurus who always has a unique way to best out of the software.  Be sure to explore her site for a few of her LR3 gold nuggets.  I'm looking forward to her new eBook, Lightroom 3 - The Missing FAQ's.

Her blog [link] is jammed packed with tons of great Lightroom tips and tricks.  Just surf over to her blog home page right here and do a quick scroll - lots of information, too little time ;~)

A Little Monday Morning CS5 Action

Adobe TV2 Looking for a little CS5 action to enhance your selection techniques.  Selecting and masking is not my strong suit in Photoshop.  I sort of stumble my way through the process and usually end up with a decent result.  The new selection and masking tools in CS5 are world class and it's worth getting to know all the intricacies of the CS5 process. You've got to check out the link right here to Adobe TV.  It shows how to use the latest, greatest selecting and masking tool in CS5.  I've watched it a couple of times and I think it's really good step-by-step information.

And On The Photography Side Of Things

Lots of Tiny Photography Tips

Here are a few photo-centric posts I found over the last few days that I thought you might find interesting.  Gavin Seim, who I mentioned earlier has a nice "common sense" photography post entitled, "Lots of Tiny Photography Tips" right here.

Finding The Blue Hour

Blue Hr2 I discovered the "blue hour" a long time ago but never knew what it was called.  Most sunset watchers think the show is over once the sun drops below the horizon.  How wrong they are.

The best show is AFTER the sun has set.  The sky goes through a beautiful kaleidoscope of colors and hues.  Near the end of the sunset show, the "blue hour" sets in.  That's the time about 30 minutes before the night sky makes it full appearance.

Detlef Winkelewski Fotografie has a nice article on the "Blue Hour" right here.  You can even download his "Blue Hour" tool so you know exactly what time to shoot.  Be sure to cruise Mr. Winkelewski's site - he's got some really nice images in his galleries.

Smoke Photography

Smoke Photography I'm a big fan of "smoke photography" and found a great "how to" article on the subject over at Designzz.com right here. Fascinating, to say the least. Thanks to Yanik's Photo School for the link tweet.

Whoa, What A Workflow

And finally, don't think you have your act together when it come to digital workflow?  Then check out this video from Chase Jarvis (discovered in a Zak Arias tweet) which outlines in the finest detail his digital workflow from "shoot to archive" right here.  You'll have to hit pause about halfway through the 10 minute video just to catch your breath;~) Tons of information.

Upcoming Educational Opportunities You Don't Want To Miss

DWF U in San Diego October 12-14, 2010:

DWF U2 I'll tell you, the Digital Wedding Forum is a great place full of ideas and creative minds for wedding photographers looking for a different edge.  It seems they always have amazing things going on - DWF-U, the DWF Blog [link], their annual convention, and coming up in October their DWF U "Live" in San Diego.  The speaker line up is dynamite including Rosilind, Bob Davis, and Cliff Mautner.  Check it out right here.

Walden U -August 22-24

Tim W2 Hey folks, this one is right around the corner.  This 3 day workshop is conducted by my good friends Tim and Bev Walden [link].  Nobody creates a more beautiful studio portrait/study than Tim and Bev.  They are experts when it comes to marketing as well.  They run a hugely successful studio in Lexington, KY.  In their workshop they will tell and show you how they do both.  LaDawn and I attended a few years ago and it was terrific.

TimW 1 Tim and Bev did one of the shootouts at our recent KPPA Summer School.  I sat in on one of the sessions.  I have to tell you, I am always impressed with Tim and Bev's easy manner, articulate presentation, and beautiful photography. The image accompanying this post is one of Tim's shots I nabbed during his presentation - his lighting is simply gorgeous, truly breath taking.  Hope you can make it to Walden U.

Hey gang, that's it for me today.  Things are shaping up to be a busy week so I've got to get back to my real job.  I hope to see everyone here tomorrow for another Technique Tuesday: Fantastic Facial Enhancement In Lightroom 3.

See ya' then.  -David

Quick Hit Monday: Radio Interviews; Mark Your Calendars; Great Reading; and Book Update!

Good  Afternoon Everybody,

We got our first dusting of snow on the ground this past weekend, always a beautiful site - unless of course you were hit by the giant Nor'easter that hit the east coast I understand you received 24 inches in Philadelphia and lots more up the coast.  Hope you guys get dug out soon.

Hey, if you can't get out today, just sit back and enjoy anther episode of Quick Hit Monday. Here we go...

My Interview At New Genesis Productions

WMOH Radio A few months ago, I was invited to be on the radio - WMOH, that's 1450 AM on your radio dial.  It's a local station, but Tony of New Genesis Productions (and fan of DigitalProTalk.com), who put the whole thing together, and I finally got together two weeks ago.

The interview covered many topics including wedding stats that were quite interesting. Like in our metro area, the wedding budget is $26,000 per wedding -WOW! The wedding photography budget is only $750 though - WHOA!

We discussed photography, photographers, brides, and what brides need to know in finding their photographer. Anyway, if you want to take some time to listen to the interview, you can find it right here. Please note: This is not a streaming file - the MP3 file needs to download in it's entirety first, about 3 minutes on a reasonably fast connection, before it will play. Still, I think you will enjoy the "listen."

Wait, there's more.  Tony also did an interview with my buddy, Larry Becker, Executive Director Of The National Association Of Photoshop Professionals.  You can find that interview right here. Poke around the New Genesis blog a while, too. Tony's got a good start on a nice photo resource for blog readers out there.

Mark Your Calendars - Three Great Workshops Coming Up!

Head over to Denis' site right here for all the info on enjoying a very personal learning experience with a master.  Register by the end of the year and save yourself $250.

3 Days With Wedding Legends - Denis Reggie and Joe Buissink

Joe2 February 22-24 - a three Day seminar with wedding legends, Denis Reggie and Joe Buissink.  Hey gang, this is your opportunity to hear 2 on the list of American PHOTO's "10 Best Wedding Photographers in the World."  The experience is limited to only 12 attendees and will take place in the intimate surrounds of Denis' personal residence.  This could be one great opportunity and one of the best educational experiences of 2010!  Here is the link for all the info.

Light, Location, Love Workshop

Camera Dojo Workshop Fellow blogging buddy and excellent photographer, Kerry Garrison along with Jules Bianchi, are conducting a one day workshop from noon to 9 p.m. on January 26, 2010.  Their program is primarily about lighting and they are planning plenty of demos during the program. They are also shaking it up a bit with a "live" model shoot including an entire wedding party.  You can get all the info right here.

Good Reading Over The Holiday Break

Syl Arena has just posted a great doubleheader list entitled, "Online Resources For Canon Photographers – Part 1[link]" and  "Online Resources For Canon Photographers – Part 2 [link]"

Canon Syl Arena The fist set are all Canon specific sites coming from Canon themselves.  The links are an invaluable resource for any Canon shooter.  The second is a list of 31 Canon centric links dealing with photography, cameras, gear, and video.  I love it when bloggers put together these lists - it's like a road map to all good information.

Be sure to bookmark both links and enjoy your "browse" over these next few days.  Thanks a bunch, Syl!!!

Quick "Captured By The Light" Book Update!

Captured By The Light Cover I just talked with the good folks over at Peachpit this past Friday.  As you know, my book "Captured By The Light" landed there last Thursday and is almost on the presses.  Peachpit's final edit is nearly complete and is due on the presses right after Christmas.

I can't believe it - things are getting very close. Forget what you've seen on Amazon or Barnes and Noble's sites. The release will be much sooner than their sites have posted.  Peachpit promised me an update this week so I'll continue to keep you posted.  From those who have seen the book so far, the "reviews" have been wonderful - I'm stoked!!

Hey gang, I've got to get moving.  The day is getting away from me and we still have a few more projects to get out the door this week.  I'll plan to see everyone tomorrow for Technique Tuesday.  See ya' then,  -David
